My cousins posed my first sartorial challenge (after so many years) when I received an event invitation over Facebook.
Even before I could read up on the event details, my eyes were led to the ‘Hello Kitty’ on the event picture.
Suddenly there was an uncomfortable churn in my stomach. That was when my worse nightmare came true.
The theme of the party was ‘Hello Kitty’.
It was a birthday celebration for my ‘Kitty’ obsessed sister. So before I could approach her and ask if it would mean all of her guest would have to be dressed in something ‘Hello Kitty’ I saw her post.
“omg!!! I am so looking forward to seeing everyone as Hello Kitty!!! Lol.”
My question to her next was if I could dress in something of another character from the Sanrio family? I could probably go all black on that day claiming to be Badtz Maru? But the answer is no, noting the evil snicker in her eyes.
So there I was pondering what to wear. I regretted buying those Hello Kitty merchandises for my sister and cousins that I had not gotten one for myself. Even her boyfriend has a Hello Kitty t-shirt!
And then I attempted to escape by drowning myself in the insane amount of work that I have yet complete. Thus this problem was swept under the carpet for the next week.
Yet, the problem resurfaces itself on the day of the event that was last Saturday. This time round I am unable to run away from this problem anymore. I had to think QUICK!
Qn. 1: What colors are usually associated to 'Hello Kitty'?
Ans: White and red.
That narrowed down to a number of shirts that I had in that color combination. In the end I settled for the Topman 'picnic mat' shirt.
Qn 2: What fashion accessory does dear Kitty swears by?
Ans: Her (hideous) bright red bow.
Wala! I have a bow tie, though not red. But I could probably argue my way out. I paired all of these with my Banana Republic skinny and throw on a vest. All of these before rushing down to collect her Kitty birthday cake.
While on the train, I felt a little uncomfortable with the stares that I received from the masses. I don't know if it was my shirt that was too bright or the jeans that seemed a little too tight. Or I guess the overall outfit warrants too many unwanted attention. So I hurry down to our meeting venue since I was late.
And when I saw the others, NONE OF THEM WERE IN THEIR 'KITTY' BEST!
That is when they told me that they changed it the last moment as not all of them look good in their kitty do-up. So there I was in my bright red checkered shirt, among the sea of black and grey.
